Flashy Labradorite Teardrop Earrings

Labradorite doesn't shine all the time. It shines when the light meets it at the right angle. Turn your head and a soft teal-gray stone wakes up in vibrant blues and greens, with flickers of yellow and pink. Turn a little more and the color slips away again. These earrings are made for that play of light.

The stone is named for Labrador, Canada, where it was found in the 1770s by Moravian missionaries on the coast. The Inuit legend, as the story goes, says the Northern Lights were once trapped in the rocks of that shore. A warrior freed most of them with his spear, and a few are still shining in the stone. The science is just as lovely. The flash is called labradorescence. Light bounces between thin layers inside the crystal, so color appears only at certain angles. In that sense labradorite is a natural resonator for light. Here it is cut into a faceted teardrop, which catches the flash in motion with every step and every turn of your head.
